上海戏曲艺术中心成立于2011年12月，是中共上海市委宣传部领导下的非营利性的戏曲院团集群，是以保护、传承、创新、发展传统戏曲艺术，推动上海戏曲事业健康发展为己任的公益服务性的事业单位。下辖上海京剧院、上海昆剧团、上海沪剧艺术传习所（上海沪剧院）、上海越剧艺术传习所（上海越剧院）、上海淮剧艺术传习所（上海淮剧团）、上海评弹艺术传习所（上海评弹团）、上海长江剧场（上海市宛平艺苑）。
中心各院团长期扎根于上海特有的文化土壤，积累下了一批独具风格的精品剧目和德艺双馨的艺术大家。周信芳、俞振飞和袁雪芬、丁是娥、筱文艳、蒋月泉等前辈大师排演的《徐策跑城》《太白醉写》《祥林嫂》《罗汉钱》《女审》《宝玉夜探》等剧（节）目和他们留下来的艺术精神、演剧方法，为各自剧种的艺术发展打下了坚实基础，也造就了新时期以来各戏曲院团在剧目建设和人才培养的丰硕成果。

Founded in December 2011, the Shanghai Traditional Opera Art Center is a non-profit cluster of opera troupes under the leadership of the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee. As a public welfare institution, it is committed to preserving, inheriting, innovating and developing traditional opera arts, as well as advancing the sound development of Shanghai’s opera undertakings.
It governs seven affiliated institutions: Shanghai Peking Opera Theatre, Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, Shanghai Huju Opera Art Institute (Shanghai Huju Theatre), Shanghai Yue Opera Art Institute (Shanghai Yue Opera Theatre), Shanghai Huai Opera Art Institute (Shanghai Huai Opera Troupe), Shanghai Pingtan Art Institute (Shanghai Pingtan Troupe), and Shanghai Changjiang Theatre (Shanghai Wanping Art Garden).
All troupes under the Center have long taken root in Shanghai’s unique cultural context, creating a wealth of distinctive classic repertoires and nurturing numerous virtuoso artists of impeccable moral character and artistic attainment.
Masterpieces staged by trailblazing masters including Zhou Xinfang, Yu Zhenfei, Yuan Xuefen, Ding Shi’e, Xiao Wenyan and Jiang Yuequan — such as Xu Ce Rides to the City, Drunken Li Bai Composes Poems, The Widow Xianglin, The Silver Ingot, The Female Judge and Baoyu’s Night Visit — alongside their artistic spirits and performing methodologies, have laid a solid foundation for the artistic evolution of their respective opera genres. Their legacy has also yielded fruitful achievements in repertoire creation and talent cultivation across all opera troupes in the new era.
