上海芭蕾舞团成立于1979 年，前身为大型芭蕾舞剧《白毛女》剧组。《白毛女》作为尝试芭蕾民族化的重要作品之一，为上海芭蕾舞团的建立奠定了基础，同时也确立了上海芭蕾舞团国内一流的地位。《白毛女》曾荣获中华民族二十世纪舞蹈经典评比展演经典奖并久演不衰，至今已上演2000 余场。

历经四十余年，上海芭蕾舞团从《白毛女》起步，到如今拥有了《天鹅湖》《罗密欧与朱丽叶》、上芭版《睡美人》《茶花女》、《葛蓓莉娅》《仙女》《吉赛尔》《堂·吉诃德》等世界经典芭蕾舞剧，《闪闪的红星》《梁山伯与祝英台》《马可·波罗——最后的使命》《简·爱》《长恨歌》《哈姆雷特》、上海大剧院版《胡桃夹子》、《歌剧魅影》《百合花》等原创芭蕾舞剧，形成了上海芭蕾舞团优雅细腻、博采众长的“海派艺术风格”。

Founded in 1979, the Shanghai Ballet originated from the cast of the grand ballet The White-Haired Girl. As one of the landmark works pioneering the nationalization of ballet in China, The White-Haired Girl laid the groundwork for the establishment of the Shanghai Ballet and secured its standing as a top-tier ballet company nationwide. The production was awarded the Classic Work Prize at the Selection and Exhibition of China’s Classic Dances of the 20th Century. A timeless staple of the repertoire, it has been staged more than 2,000 times to this day.
Over the past four decades and more, building on its iconic debut The White-Haired Girl, the Shanghai Ballet has assembled an extensive repertoire. It includes world-renowned classical ballets such as Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, the company’s own versions of The Sleeping Beauty and La Dame aux Camélias, as well as Coppélia, La Sylphide, Giselle and Don Quixote. Its original creations span Sparkling Red Star, Butterfly Lovers, Marco Polo: The Final Mission, Jane Eyre, Song of Everlasting Sorrow, Hamlet, the Shanghai Grand Theatre edition of The Nutcracker, The Phantom of the Opera and Lily. Together, these works have forged the Shanghai School artistic identity of the troupe—refined, delicate and inclusive of diverse artistic strengths.
