Shanghai Opera House is the largest comprehensive state-owned performing arts troupe in Shanghai and a distinguished professional musical theatre ensemble with remarkable achievements and a stellar reputation across China. It was formed through the merger of several revolutionary literary and artistic groups, tracing its earliest origins back to the Xin’an Travelling Troupe founded in 1935.
Since its official establishment in October 1956, the House has nurtured a host of renowned veteran artists including Ren Guizhen, Shi Hong’e, Li Zhonglin and Shu Qiao, leaving an illustrious legacy in opera, dance drama, chorus, symphony and musical theatre.
Today, led by leading artists Wei Song, Xu Zhong and Shi Yijie, Shanghai Opera House comprises multiple talent-rich professional divisions: the Opera Troupe, Chorus, Symphony Orchestra, Dance Troupe, Opera Production Department and Stage Technology Department.

Maintaining in-depth collaborations with world-famous opera houses and artists, the troupe has co-produced a vast roster of timeless Western operas: Tosca, Roméo et Juliette, Die Fledermaus, Carmen, Faust, Aida, La Traviata, Otello, La Bohème, Les Pêcheurs de perles, Attila, Manon Lescaut, Falstaff, La Fille du Régiment, Nabucco, Turandot, Der fliegende Holländer, Das Land des Lächelns, Lohengrin, Madama Butterfly, Don Giovanni, Tristan und Isolde, Cavalleria rusticana, Pagliacci, Le nozze di Figaro, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Così fan tutte.
It has also presented grand Chinese and Western symphonic choral and oratorio masterpieces such as Carmina Burana, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, and Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette. Its touring performances have reached more than 30 countries and regions across five continents.
